Public Speaking Insights For Students Original post: Sun 4/19/2020 at 1:05 PM

At Oglala Lakota College, the teachers are passionate about helping students be well-prepared once they begin their career. There are going to be many pitfalls and challenges that young adults are going to face which is why building your self confidence is going to be paramount. One way to do so is by learning how to speak in public. Being able to Give a presentation in front of people will help you tremendously which is why we encourage students to enter the Speech Competition every year.

Some may wonder if anyone can speak in public and the answer is a resounding yes so long as you put the time and effort in to practicing. Sometimes it seems like some people naturally have public speaking skills. However, good public speaking skills aren’t something you’re just born with. Everybody, even those that seem to be natural born speakers, had to learn those skills and practice them to perfect them. If they can learn them, then so can you.

Good public skills can come with study and practice. Choose Public Speaking Topics wisely. Read everything you can on the topic and spend a lot of time writing your speech. Once you have a speech written, the real work begins. Rehearse! Good public speaking skills only come through practice. Spending enough time in rehearsal will help you prevent problems, develop confidence, and give you freedom to be spontaneous.

Your rehearsal should be as close to the real situation as possible. Wear the clothes you plan to wear so you know if your shoes are going to hurt enough to be a distraction, or if your prop is too difficult to pull out of your pocket. Find out how big the stage will be and measure it off so you can practice any movements you will use. If you haven’t done it before, practice writing on the board or on a flip chart. Good public speaking skills begin with attention to details.

You can also improve your public speaking skills by working on the transitions in your speech. This is one area that many new public speakers need to strengthen. You can move through a point well, then stutter and halt through a transition into the next point. Being able to manage a smooth transition is one of the critical public speaking skills that can be taken care of ahead of time.

Developing your public speaking skills depends on regular practice and consistent rehearsals. According to, if you want to have a Public Speaking Career as a professional speaker, or just do a good job on speeches in your current job, you need to keep practicing. Public speaking is like any other skill – golfing, painting, or dancing – once you learn the technique you have to practice until you are good at it.

Nowadays, there are many professional speakers who are marketing their public speaking skills to the public. However, not all of the methods mentioned in these books and videos are effective. There are some people who haven’t been very successful but write a book and put it out anyway. As long as you steer clear of these products and stick with proven materials from proven speakers, you should be on the way to developing good public speaking skills.
